A Foster City restaurant in the US has gained national attention following a viral social media post highlighting its strict policy regarding children's conduct. You You Xue, owner of the Bay Area eatery Chez Xue, implemented the guidelines over a year ago, requiring parents to keep their children seated and respectful while dining, and holding guardians financially responsible for any property damage.

The notice, which has recently garnered nearly 1.7 million views online, states: "Chez Xue is a family-friendly restaurant. However, we are not a playground. Xue noted that the policy was prompted by a noticeable decline in parental supervision, which he believes has created safety hazards for staff and other patrons. He described instances of children treating the dining room like "a racetrack" while servers navigated the floor with hot soup, sharp knives, and flaming dishes. Other incidents cited by the owner include children climbing on outdoor fixtures, carving designs into custom furniture, and even one instance where a parent changed a child's diaper on a dining table near other guests. In another case, a parent allowed a child to play with a credit card machine, which was shattered when dropped. Xue stated that the parents paid USD 327 to replace the device only after he threatened legal action.

"Our intention was not to start some sort of debate," Xue told Fox News Digital. "The policy is common sense, and the reaction is a little bit confusing." He clarified that the policy does not involve "fines," but rather a standard expectation of accountability for damages.

Expert Perspectives on Dining Etiquette

The debate has drawn commentary from industry experts regarding the responsibilities of both business owners and parents. Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, founder of the Protocol School of Texas, emphasized that businesses are entitled to set conduct expectations to maintain a hygienic environment. "No customer wants to eat off the table from another customer who just changed a diaper on the table, regardless of whether or not it was previously cleaned," Gottsman said. Professional development expert Jan Goss noted that dining out serves as a vital learning environment for children. "Children need these opportunities to learn how to function in public spaces," Goss explained. "It's all about respect. It's not restrictive. Respect allows everyone to be able to enjoy the same space," Goss added. Despite the viral backlash and support, Xue maintains that his restaurant remains "family-forward," noting that roughly 98 per cent of young diners behave well. He has no intention of banning children from the premises.

"We're not going to allow the few to ruin it for the many," Xue said. "I'm not trying to be condescending. I'm really just trying to be transparent with my customers," he added. He encouraged parents to treat public dining as a privilege and to use the experience as a "teachable moment" for their children.
