Coronavirus Hits Greater Andaman Tribe; India Records Highest One Day Rise With Over 75,000 Cases

Ten members of India's dwindling Great Andamanese tribe have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said on August 27. This leads to concerns about the safety of the group & other indigenous people in the remote archipelago. Out of the 10, six have recovered and have been put in home quarantine, while the rest are undergoing treatment in a local hospital, officials told AFP. Just over 50 Great Andamanese people survive today and live on the tiny Strait Island. India has reported 75,760 cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, marking the biggest daily rise in the country, Union Health Ministry data shows. Fresh cases have pushed the country's coronavirus tally to over 33.1 lakh cases with 60,472 deaths being reported. 25,23,771 patients have recovered from the infection in the country, taking the recovery rate to 76.24 per cent. Maharashtra remains the hardest-hit state in the pandemic with the state reporting a single-day highest spike of 14,888 coronavirus cases which took the case count to 7,18,711.
