Kolkata, January 25: Yet another disturbing incident of violence against Hindu minorities has surfaced in Bangladesh, raising serious concerns over law and order as national elections draw closer. A 23-year-old Hindu man, Chanchal Chandra Bhowmik, was burned alive while sleeping inside a garage in Narsingdi, located around 50 kilometres from Dhaka.
The victim, identified as Chanchal Chandra Bhowmik, was the son of Khokan Chandra Bhowmik and hailed from Lakshmipur village in Cumilla district. He worked at a garage situated in the Khanabari Mosque Market area under the Narsingdi Police Lines. According to local accounts, Bhowmik returned to the garage on Friday night after finishing work and fell asleep inside due to exhaustion. Unidentified assailants allegedly set the garage on fire while he was asleep. With petrol, engine oil and other inflammable materials stored inside, the blaze spread rapidly, leaving him trapped. He reportedly died of suffocation and severe burn injuries in what locals and eyewitnesses have described as a deliberate and planned murder. CCTV footage from nearby cameras reportedly captured individuals setting the garage ablaze, though the attackers have not yet been identified. Police officials said the body has been recovered, CCTV footage seized and multiple teams deployed to trace the culprits.
According to the 2022 census, Bangladesh is home to around 13.13 million Hindus, forming nearly 7.95 per cent of the population. India has repeatedly raised concerns over attacks on Hindus, especially following the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, amid fears of growing extremism in the neighbouring country.
