A 21-year-old British woman has been arrested in Thailand after her boyfriend was found dead with multiple stab wounds at a home in Pattaya, according to local media reports.
The victim, identified as Thomas David Powell, 34, was found dead on Thursday morning at a luxury rental property in the Pattaya area, around two hours from Bangkok. Police said his girlfriend, Isabel Violet Carreras, was sitting beside his body when officers arrived.
Victim Found With Multiple Stab Wounds
According to the Bangkok Post, Powell suffered six stab wounds, including three to the torso, two to the back and one to his left hand. His body was discovered in the bathroom, and investigators believe he had been dead for around six hours before police reached the scene. Police also recovered a washed 50-centimetre machete from a sink inside the house.
Police Question Woman's Account
Carreras allegedly told investigators that Powell had injured himself. However, police said her account contained inconsistencies.
Investigators also noticed cuts on her fingertips, raising further suspicion. Local reports said she appeared to be heavily intoxicated by cannabis when police arrived.
She reportedly told officers that the couple had spent the day looking at engagement rings before returning home and smoking cannabis together. She claimed she could not remember what happened afterward. UK: Child Killer Was Stabbed More Than 30 Times by Fellow Inmates at HMP Wakefield.
Evidence of a Struggle Found Inside the House
During the investigation, police found bloodstains and signs of a struggle in several parts of the house. Investigators also believe the victim's body had been moved, noting that a pillow had been placed beneath his head.
A friend of Powell alerted authorities after receiving information from one of the victim's business associates in the United States that something was wrong. The friend visited the property, recorded a video of the scene and then contacted the police.
Couple Planned to Settle in Thailand
Police said Powell operated a cannabis farm from the luxury rental property in Pattaya. The couple had reportedly been in a relationship for two years and planned to settle permanently in Thailand.
The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is assisting the families.
"We are supporting the families of two British nationals in Thailand and are in contact with the local authorities," an FCDO spokesperson said.
Thai police are continuing their investigation into the case.
