Japanese influencer Mina Chan, known online as Minachan and reported to be a 26-year-old fan of K-pop group ENHYPEN, has died by suicide in Seoul.
A Japanese social media influencer known online as Minachan has died in Seoul after an apparent suicide during a TikTok livestream, according to reports citing South Korean police. The woman, who was in her 20s and had about 80,000 TikTok followers, was found dead at an accommodation in Seoul's Yongsan District on August 5. Her younger sister has since confirmed her death, while police continue to investigate the circumstances, according to a report.
The case has drawn widespread attention online because Minachan was known as a devoted fan of the K-pop group ENHYPEN, particularly its Japanese member Ni-Ki. Her death has also revived discussion about criticism she faced online shortly before the incident. However, there is no official confirmation that the online controversy or Ni-Ki's comments caused or contributed to her death. Police Respond to TikTok Livestream Report
According to reports citing Seoul's Yongsan Police Station, officers received an emergency report at about 5:33 a.m. on August 5 concerning a Japanese woman who was reportedly attempting suicide while livestreaming on TikTok. A friend who was watching the broadcast is reported to have contacted emergency services. Police subsequently found the woman at her residence in Yongsan, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities have not publicly released her name. The identification of the woman as Minachan has instead come through her online identity and subsequent reports from media outlets and social media sources. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and have not indicated evidence of criminal involvement. Family confirms Minachan's death
Minachan's younger sister confirmed her death on Instagram on August 6. In a message to followers, she described her sister as a kind and warm person and asked the public to respect the family's privacy. She also requested that people refrain from speculation or further inquiries about the circumstances of the death. The family has not publicly attributed the death to any particular event, individual or online dispute.
ENHYPEN connection draws attention
Minachan was widely known within the ENHYPEN fandom as a dedicated supporter of Ni-Ki. Reports say she regularly attended concerts and fan events and maintained an online account focused on the group. Her name became the subject of heightened discussion within the fandom following an incident at an ENHYPEN concert during the group's US tour.
According to online accounts, she had asked fellow member Sunoo to pass flowers to Ni-Ki. The incident subsequently prompted criticism from some fans, who accused her of seeking excessive attention from the group.
Minachan later posted an apology, saying she regretted her actions and acknowledging that her repeated interactions with the group had affected her perception of her relationship with the members.
Ni-Ki's comments fuel online speculation
The controversy intensified after Ni-Ki discussed concert behaviour during a livestream around July 30. He spoke generally about fans who appeared more focused on receiving individual attention from artists than on enjoying the concert. He said he found such behaviour disappointing and stressed that concerts should be spaces where everyone could enjoy themselves.
Ni-Ki did not name Minachan, refer to the flower incident or identify a specific fan. Nevertheless, some users online interpreted his remarks as being directed at her. That interpretation has not been confirmed by Ni-Ki, his agency or police.
Online criticism continues to be examined
Following the concert controversy, Minachan faced criticism across social media and subsequently apologised publicly. Reports say the criticism continued even after her apology.
Her death has now prompted renewed debate about online harassment, fan culture and the pressure surrounding highly visible participation in K-pop communities.
However, the sequence of events should not be treated as proof of causation. Police have not said that online criticism, the ENHYPEN controversy or Ni-Ki's remarks were responsible for her death. The investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities continue investigation
South Korean authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the death. The precise sequence of events and any factors that may have influenced the woman's actions have not been publicly established.
As the investigation continues, officials and the family have urged against speculation, while social media users have been asked to avoid circulating sensitive material from the livestream. The case has meanwhile raised broader questions about the responsibilities of online communities when criticism escalates into sustained personal attacks, particularly in highly active celebrity and fan communities.
