What Maduro Wrote In His First Post

"I am sending these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, to the boys and girls, and to all the good people who love us," Maduro wrote on social media. "I want you to know that we are standing firm, with our hearts full of your love," he added.

Maduro ended his message with a further declaration of resolve. "We will remain strong, calm and confident: God is with us. God will provide. Venezuela will rise again," he said. First Photos From US Detention

The two photographs show Maduro wearing a grey tracksuit and raising both hands in peace signs. He appears to have lost considerable weight since his capture. Although the images were posted on Sunday, camera data indicates they were taken on June 25, a day after twin deadly earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, killing more than 6,500 people and causing widespread destruction.

The photographs are the first publicly released images of Maduro from inside US detention. The US detention centre had not immediately responded to requests seeking confirmation about whether the photographs had been authorised.

The 63-year-old leader does not have access to newspapers or the internet in prison, but he is permitted to speak by telephone with family members and lawyers for about 300 minutes a month, with individual calls limited to 15 minutes, according to a source close to the former leader.

His son, Nicolas Maduro Guerra, has said that his father is in good shape and spends his time studying the Bible. Maduro and Flores are being held without bail as their US case proceeds. A federal court in New York has scheduled their trial for June 1, 2027.

Maduro’s Message Comes After Venezuela-US Oil Deal

The timing of Maduro's message has drawn attention because it appeared shortly after Rodriguez announced a major oil agreement with the Trump administration. Rodriguez has said she has "chosen the path of diplomacy" with Washington, arguing that the arrangement could help transform Venezuela into an "energy powerhouse".

Under the agreement announced by US President Donald Trump, Washington would gain majority control over Venezuelan oil production through partnerships with private companies. Trump has said Venezuelan oil from the arrangement would also be used to replenish the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Trump has described the Venezuelan crude as a "Gift from Venezuela to the People of the United States".

What The Oil Agreement Means

The agreement does not mean Venezuelan crude can immediately begin flowing into the US strategic reserve.

Details of the arrangement, including the specific fields and companies involved and how majority US control would work, remain limited. Venezuela's ageing oil infrastructure also requires substantial investment, particularly to increase its capacity to extract and transport its heavy crude.

Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves but currently produces only around 1.25 million barrels per day, well below its potential.

Several companies, including US firms, are expected to receive new exploration and production rights. Chevron is among those expected to finalise talks to bring its existing Venezuelan joint ventures under the new framework.

Nicolas Maduro’s Legal Case

Maduro and Flores were captured in Caracas during a US military operation in January and subsequently brought to the United States. They face charges including drug trafficking and firearms offences, which both deny. US prosecutors have accused Maduro of involvement in a drug-trafficking conspiracy, while Maduro has rejected the allegations.

The federal trial is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027. Maduro's first publicly released images from detention therefore come at a significant moment for Venezuela, as the government led by Rodriguez pursues closer economic ties with Washington while the country's former president remains in US custody awaiting trial.
