Spain has initiated the process to replace its ambassador to India, Juan Antonio March Pujol, following serious allegations that he solicited financial favors from an Indian private firm and misused government funds for cultural events.
The decision follows an official report sent in late May by Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the country's Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office detailing potential financial irregularities and misuse of diplomatic resources.
Allegations of Public Fund Misuse
According to details reported by Spanish outlet The Objective, the central allegations against March Pujol center on the promotion of international cultural events in India using state resources.
Dealings with Visa Outsourcing Firm
Reports indicate that March Pujol secured a €5,000 direct contribution from BLS International toward a cultural event organized in Rajasthan. The financial transaction has raised regulatory scrutiny regarding potential conflicts of interest and unauthorized private sponsorship arrangements involving official service providers.
Diplomatic Context and Background
March Pujol, a veteran diplomat who entered Spain's diplomatic corps in 1987, took charge as Spain's ambassador to India in mid-2024 after a 12-year hiatus from active diplomatic service.
Over his long career, March Pujol has held several prominent international assignments, including Spanish Ambassador to Russia (2007–2011), Spain's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, and representative to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Prior to his posting in New Delhi, he also served as president of the ONUART Foundation.
Spanish authorities are proceeding with administrative and legal reviews while moving forward with plans to appoint a successor to lead the diplomatic mission in New Delhi.
