An Indian employee has alleged that the entire 80-member customer support team at US firm Bluevine was fired during a five-minute Google Meet call, with staffers blindsided late into their evening shift after being told to work from home for 'operational reasons'.
An employee has alleged that the entire customer support unit of an Indian team, comprising around 80 staffers, was fired during a five-minute Google Meet call by an American financial firm, sparking outrage on social media over the manner in which the layoffs were carried out. In a post titled 'Laid off over a Google Meet', the employee detailed that the team was asked to work remotely for the day citing 'operational reasons', only to be blindsided with termination news late into their evening shift, with no prior warning despite having reportedly worked round the clock out of fear for their job security.
'Entire Indian Customer Service Team Has Been Fired'
The employee said they were three hours into a 6:30 pm shift when senior management called the team onto a virtual meeting to deliver the news.
'I was doing a 6.30pm, shift and at 9.30pm they just invited us on a Google Meet and told us the entire Indian Customer service team has been fired!' the employee wrote, adding, 'All 80 employees! The post further read, 'I feel bad that we work for these corporates who can throw us out anytime and regret that I used to work hard at my job.'
Company Named As Bluevine
As the post gained traction online, several users questioned which company was behind the firings.
Responding to a user, the affected employee identified the firm as 'Bluevine', a digital banking platform offering online business checking accounts, payment tools and lines of credit for small businesses. Employee Claims Team Was Blamed For 'Output' Despite Attrition On US Side
The employee alleged that management had cited underperformance by the Indian team as the reason behind the decision.
'They were not getting the expected output from the Indian team. Bullcr*p! Because their US time had the maximum amount of attrition, discretionary time, and would hardly get things right. Whereas we, because of job security, would always push ourselves in the name of job security!' the employee wrote.
