What Caused the Delay

EPFO had originally planned to complete the migration by June 29 but pushed the deadline multiple times, with services remaining suspended through July 1 and into the following days. Subscribers were told to expect delays, and EPFO set up a helpline, number 14470, to assist members during the outage.

Services Now Restored

As of July 3, 2026, subscribers can log back into the portal for most routine functions. PF account holders can now access UAN-related activities, profile updates, and other member services, though the standalone EPF Passbook portal continues to display an "unavailable" status while upgrade work is finished.

A Passbook Lite feature has been made available as an interim option for members who need quick access to balance information while the full passbook service is restored.

New Features Introduced With the Upgrade

Beyond simply restoring access, EPFO has rolled out several changes to the portal's functionality. A new Member Service History page has been added for better tracking of employment and transfer records, and the Member ID Delink option has been relocated under this section. The PF Advance form has also been reorganised, with withdrawal requests now grouped into three categories, and the portal automatically calculates a member's eligible claim amount before submission.

Under current withdrawal rules, members can withdraw a portion of their eligible balance for qualifying reasons, provided at least 25 percent remains in the account, and the portal now performs this calculation automatically rather than requiring members to estimate eligibility manually.

A new claim status tracking system is also being introduced in phases, meaning both the updated version and the older legacy tracker are currently running side by side.

UAN Activation Process Changes

One of the more significant shifts affects how members activate their Universal Account Number. UAN activation and new UAN generation have moved to the UMANG app, where members must complete the process using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication, and this option is no longer available directly through the EPFO portal.

Death claim and pension claim services remain active on the portal. Beneficiaries applying for these services need to keep their Aadhaar-linked mobile number active and have their bank details ready, along with documents such as the member's death certificate, a cancelled cheque or passbook, and age proof, submitted as PDF files under 2 MB.

The portal upgrade coincides with a broader regulatory change. The Ministry of Labour and Employment has notified the new Employees' Provident Fund Scheme, 2026, replacing the EPF Scheme of 1952, as part of the implementation of the Social Security Code, 2020.
