Etsy Layoffs: 220 Jobs Reduced by E-Commerce Giant in Major Restructuring Plan
Etsy is cutting 220 jobs, or 12% of its workforce, through a restructuring led by CEO Kruti Patel Goyal to streamline product and engineering teams. The move follows strong Q2 revenue of 668.3 million USD and a 2 billion USD buyback authorization as the platform sharpens its core marketplace focus.
Online marketplace Etsy has announced plans to eliminate approximately 220 jobs, representing 12% of its global workforce, as part of a sweeping organisational restructuring under Chief Executive Officer Kruti Patel Goyal. The reduction will bring the company's total headcount down to roughly 1,600 employees, with the majority of the affected positions concentrated within the product, engineering, design, research, and analytics departments.
As per a Analytics Insight report, the strategic shift is intended to simplify internal processes, improve inter-departmental collaboration, and accelerate product development rather than serve as a direct cost-reduction exercise. Leadership noted that the company's historical growth had introduced overlapping responsibilities and management layers, which the latest changes aim to eliminate by creating smaller, more agile teams. Organisational Realignment and Strategy
The restructuring plan is designed to remove silos and foster flatter corporate hierarchies capable of responding swiftly to shifting consumer behaviour and heightened competition. Executives emphasized that the workforce adjustment is not driven by artificial intelligence adoption, though technology continues to shape how product features and marketplace search capabilities are developed.
Affected staff members are set to receive comprehensive exit support, including a minimum of 16 weeks of severance pay, extended healthcare benefits, and career transition assistance. The entire restructuring process is projected to involve approximately 35 million USD in severance and associated charges, with implementation expected to conclude by the end of the third quarter.
Financial Performance and Market Focus
The announcement coincided with the release of Etsy's second-quarter financial results, which demonstrated stable underlying momentum despite broader pressures in discretionary retail spending. Quarterly revenue rose by 6.2% year on year to reach 668.3 million USD, outperforming analyst expectations, while marketplace gross merchandise sales saw positive growth. As per a BW People report, the company has also authorised a 2 billion USD share buyback program. Following the divestiture of its Depop business, Etsy is sharpening its strategic focus entirely on enhancing its core artisanal marketplace, optimizing seller tools, and strengthening discovery systems for independent creators.
