While artificial intelligence continues to dominate global technology headlines, a quiet but transformative disruption is unfolding across India’s deep-tech sector: the rapid emergence of a homegrown quantum computing ecosystem. Approximately 100 Indian startups are now actively building advanced hardware and supply chains, supported by the government’s National Quantum Mission (NQM). This collective effort is positioning India as a potentially significant player in the global quantum revolution, aiming to secure sovereign digital infrastructure while fostering high-tech productivity.

Building India’s Quantum Infrastructure

The national push for quantum dominance reached a significant milestone in April 2026, when India successfully deployed a 1,000-kilometre-long quantum network, currently the longest such infrastructure outside China. Developed by the Bengaluru-based startup QNu Labs, the network is designed for ultra-secure communication and serves as a foundational layer for future quantum internet connectivity.

Organisations ranging from national defence forces to major banking and telecommunications firms are already adopting these security solutions to protect sensitive data against future quantum-enabled cyber threats. QNu Labs has since expanded its operations into the United States and West Asia, with its leadership team expressing an ambition to establish India as a "quantum vaccine" provider, offering global security solutions that mirror the nation’s previous success in international healthcare diplomacy.

Startups and the National Quantum Mission

The National Quantum Mission (NQM), which is backed by INR 6,000 crore investment through 2031, is serving as the primary catalyst for this industrial shift. Beyond general funding, the NQM has formulated exclusive guidelines to onboard and support quantum-focused startups, with eight promising ventures already receiving dedicated support. This support extends across various critical domains, including quantum computing hardware, secure communication protocols, and high-sensitivity sensing technologies.

Prominent players are now emerging across the full spectrum of quantum development. For instance, QpiAI Tech has made notable strides in hardware, developing one of India’s most advanced 25-qubit superconducting quantum processors. By integrating artificial intelligence with quantum modeling, the company aims to accelerate drug discovery and materials science research, effectively reducing India’s dependence on foreign quantum cloud infrastructure.

Fostering a Global Quantum-Ready Ecosystem

State-level initiatives are further accelerating this progress, with regions like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana competing to establish dedicated innovation hubs. Karnataka has announced a 1,000 crore INR Quantum Mission aimed at creating a 20 billion USD quantum economy in the state by 2035. These efforts include the development of quantum hardware parks, innovation zones, and specialised fabrication facilities for quantum components.

As the industry matures, the focus remains on talent development and bridging the gap between theoretical research and commercialisation. With upcoming national symposiums and international collaborations, India is working to build a "quantum-ready" workforce capable of driving long-term innovation. The current strategy aims to translate these scientific advancements into practical economic benefits, ensuring India secures a top-tier position in the global quantum-powered economy by the next decade.
