In his massive filmography, Garfield has delivered so many amazing performances that its hard to pin down one that can be considered as his best. Every role is just too good, but it looks like these five surely speak to his great capabilities as a performer. So, to celebrate Andrew Garfield’s 40th birthday, we are taking a look at five of his best performances.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man (The Amazing Spider-Man Films)

Spider-Man was the role that shot Garfield’s career into the atmosphere, and following Tobey Maguire’s footsteps is no easy task. While the initial response to his performance was mixed, over the years after the release of the film, its pretty clear that Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man was easily an accurate rendition of what the character is supposed to be like. While it’s a shame that it was so short lived, Garfield easily was the best part of the films.

Desmond Doss (Hacksaw Ridge)

One of Garfield’s most celebrated roles comes in Hacksaw Ridge where he portrays the real-life army medic Desmon Doss. A World War II biopic, the film focuses on Doss, a Seventh-Day Adventist Christian who refused to carry any weapons, and was decorated for saving many during his time in the battlefield. Garfield delivers an emotional performance that will surely have you in tears.

Sebastiao Rodrigues (Silence)

Working with Martin Scorsese on Silence, Andrew Garfield proved why he is one of the best actors working today. Playing the Jesuit Priest Sebastio Rodrigues, the film chronicles his journey as he travels from Portugal to Japan to find his missing mentor, and Garfield provides a dedicated performance that speaks very well to the grander themes of the film.

Eduardo Saverin (The Social Network)

David Fincher’s biopic about the origins of Facebook is filled with some amazing performances, but its Garfield’s portrayal of Eduardo that stands out so much. Showcasing how he was pushed out of the company and his lawsuit with Mark Zuckerberg, Garfield brings a chaotic energy to him that really showcased his acting talents.

Jonathan Larson (Tick, Tick… Boom!)

Garfield completely blew us away with his performance as Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick… Boom!. A performance filled with so much energy and excitement, the musical was a perfect display of what a star Garfield is while playing this real-life icon with the utmost respect.
