Christopher Nolan Breaks Silence on ‘The Odyssey’ Modern English Dialogue Controversy, Says ‘I Was Maybe Naive’
Christopher Nolan addresses the controversy surrounding modern English dialogue in his new film 'The Odyssey' (July 17, 2026 release), starring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway. The director explains his creative choice for accessibility in the Universal Pictures epic, filmed entirely on IMAX 70mm.
Hollywood is abuzz with anticipation for Christopher Nolan's latest magnum opus, The Odyssey, set to hit theatres on July 17, 2026. However, the film, an ambitious adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic, has already sparked considerable debate, particularly concerning its use of modern English dialogue and American accents in an ancient setting. ‘The Odyssey’ FIRST Reactions: Christopher Nolan’s Ambitious Epic Is ‘Breathtaking, Bold and Perfect’; Matt Damon and Cast Deliver Gripping Performances.
In a recent interview with the LA Times, Nolan broke his silence on the controversy, defending his creative decisions and emphasising his vision for the epic.
Christopher Nolan on ‘The Odyssey’ Dialect
Nolan explained that his primary goal was to make the timeless story resonate with today's viewers. "I wanted to tell it in a fresh and modern way, to make it as accessible for a modern audience as it was for Homer's," he stated. The director acknowledged that the choice might be seen as unconventional but firmly stood by it, saying, "I wanted to use language that has emotional, not intellectual meaning to people."
Lines like Tom Holland's Telemachus stating, “My dad is coming home,” or Robert Pattinson's character chiding with, “You're pining for a daddy you never knew,” from the trailers have drawn specific criticism for sounding too modern. Nolan, however, was undeterred. "I was maybe being naïve, it might bite me on the ass, but I wanted an earthy narrative. To me, it was a no-brainer," he elaborated, suggesting that emotional authenticity trumped linguistic recreation.
He further added that casting a star-heavy ensemble was also a conscious choice to help audiences connect with the mythological figures. "I wanted to cast it big, get the finest bunch of actors," Nolan noted, believing their familiar faces would help a modern audience feel at home in an ancient story.
