As per a report in The Economic Times, a company called Phonographic Performance (PPL) holds the rights of over two million songs from many languages to be played at a public venue. PPL has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court and has taken some big hotels and party organisers to the court for playing songs in their possession, and charging copyright allegations against them. PPL has collaborations with more than 300 music labels which includes top players like Saregama India, Tips Industries, Universal Music India, and Sony Music Entertainment India.

As per ET who has seen a copy of the petition, it reads, "In order to ensure that the use of its repertoire is not made unauthorisedly… addressed a notice to the defendants… to apply for public performance licences and pay the requisite licence fee for the legitimate use of the sound recordings belonging to the plaintiff in the year-end events."

With these issues, the only two way for an organiser to play a song at a party is to buy the rights from PPL or avoid playing these songs at the venue. The report further states that the legal teams of the hotel properties are looking forward to the court offering an amicable solution
