Okay I'm just going to cut to the chase instead of coming up with a fancy way to start the review. Saamy Square received a lot of flak after they put up the first trailer. Fans who loved the first film of the franchise were devastated to see how the second one looked and so were critics. The film is no different. Saamy Square starts right where the first one ends. In fact, the makers even show Aarusamy getting married to Bhuvana (played by Trisha Krishnan) and how he kills Perumal Pichai. It was established already that Ramasaamy is Aarusamy's son. What might come as a surprise or a disappointment to you is that the villain, Raavana Pichai (played by Bobby Simha). The makers have played around the names Ram and Raavan quite tactfully.

Not only does Saamy Square suffer from a poor plot but it also fails to nail the masala entertainment criteria, which is basically the crux of the film. Ramasaamy, along with his maternal grandparents, has moved to Delhi and works as a Front End Manager with the Central Minister (played by Prabhu) who is also aspiring to become an IAS Officer. Every time he touches a police uniform, there are too many special effects and none of it makes any sense.

Though the writers and directors have made sure that they retain some of the nostalgia factor from the first movie. For instance, Ramasaamy goes back to small town that his entire family used to live in and a couple of people from the vicinity recognize him since he is a spitting image of his father. One of them gives him a plate of idli and beer, which confuses him but well, it reminds you of how Aarusaamy mixed idli with beer for breakfast. Saamy Square will just make you want to watch the first film again. But we can definitely appreciate the writer and the director for executing the climax so well. Not to mention, the antagonist is much stronger than the one in the first film.

Yay!

- Bobby Simha as Raavana Pichai

- The climax of the film

Nay!

- One of Vikram's most disappointing performances

- Shoddy writing and execution

- Forced violence and humour

- The plot is very predictable

Final Verdict

Saamy Square fails to impress and the only thing that you would probably find worth appreciating is how the end was executed. Chiyaan Vikram is not as outrageous as shown in the trailer but his character fails to create the impact that Aarusaamy created. Comparing Keerthy Suresh's recent films to this one, the actress' character might seem irrelevant to an extent but the film doesn't give her an opportunity to do much.
