Shimla, July 17: In a shocking video posted on Twitter by Healing Himalayas, an NGO working to create environmental awareness, Ashwani Khad river was seen overflowing due to heavy rains in the northern part of India. But sadly the river, which supplies water to Shimla city and Solan district, was seen overflowing with litter. The top of the river was littered with plastic and other non-biodegradable waste. The video shows how the increasing use of plastic and other non- biodegradable waste has damaged the marine life and pushed it into a sorry state.

The reason behind the river's condition is alleged to be the Salogra solid waste dumping ground, located near the river bank. And since heavy rains have been lashing northern India, the entire waste has been washed into the river. The minute the video was shared on Twitter, several people, including celebrities like Dia Mirza, Randeep Hooda expressed their disappointment and also appealed others to stop using single-use plastic, one of the main reason behind the marine life pollution.

Here is the tweet carrying the video of Ashwani Khad river overflowing and carrying plastic waste amid heavy rains:

In a similar incident, during a high tide in Mumbai, several tonnes of garbage washed up the shores a few days ago. BMC deployed several workers to take up the clean up work immediately so that Mumbaikars can once again enjoy the scenic beauty of seashore.

One of the BMC officers also called the incident "Sacred games" between humans and mother nature, indicating that what we sow, we shall reap. The more we throw litter into the sea and take it for granted, it will give it back. After the videos and pictures of Marine Drive promenade littered with plastic waste went viral on social media, many vowed to stop using single-use plastic. Though it is a small step from an individual, collectively, it will help to bring a big change and contribute towards the betterment of the environment.
