Bhopal, June 20: A debt-ridden farmer in Mandsaur – the epicentre of Madhya Pradesh's agrarian revolt – allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree, news agency ANI reported on Wednesday.

The deceased's identity was yet to be confirmed. The Mandsaur police has launched an investigation into the case. Although the death prima facie appears to be a case of suicide, the police is exploring all angles.

The agrarian suicide comes nearly a month after a farmer based in Madhya Pradesh's Sehore district ended his life. The deceased, identified as 40-year-old Roop Singh Levanshi, was stressed due to a pending loan of Rs 1 lakh, along with his four acre of land being mortgaged, his kin claimed.

Kedar Sirohi, the chief of Aam Kisan Union which actively participated in the recent 10-day agrarian strike called from June 1-10, said farmers across the state are distressed due to crop damage and inadequate remunerative prices.

"Farmers in our state are facing a twin onslaught. First of all, the insurance companies are fooling them. Secondly, the agricultural markets are not ensuring adequate remunerative prices," Sirohi said.

The suicide case also comes a day after the panel probing the death of five Mandsaur farmers in retaliatory police action last year gave a clean chit to the security forces. The one-man commission, headed by Justice (retd) JK Jain, said the CRPF and police personnel were forced to fire for "self-preservation" and "mob-dispersal" purposes.
