The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has added a dedicated chapter on startups and entrepreneurship to the Class 9 Social Science curriculum, introducing students to the world of business through a lesson titled 'From Ideas to Startups'. The chapter appears in the council's new textbook, 'Understanding Society: India and Beyond - Part 2', and aims to familiarise young learners with how businesses are born, run and planned, using real-life stories of Indian entrepreneurs. In a post on X, NCERT said, "The chapter explores business opportunities, market understanding, business planning, India's startup ecosystem and the role of AI in business decision-making, with real-life stories of Indian entrepreneurs."

According to reports, the chapter is built around three broad questions: how entrepreneurship affects society and the economy, what the main functional areas of a business are, and how an effective business plan is prepared.

India's Startup Ecosystem In Numbers

The textbook points out how quickly the startup landscape has changed. India had around 350-400 startups about a decade ago, but the ecosystem has since grown to nearly 2.3 lakh enterprises, making India the world's third largest startup ecosystem, it states. The book also says the broader policy push is to bring research, industry, startups and entrepreneurship onto a common platform. CBSE Third-Language Rule: Supreme Court Extends Exemption to Class 6 Students.

What Will Students Learn?

Students are introduced to the building blocks of running a business, including understanding market activity, spotting opportunities, assessing performance, and planning carefully before committing resources. Several reports suggest the chapter also brings artificial intelligence into the discussion, explaining how AI can help with market analysis and business-related decision-making.

Lijjat Papad: Seven Women, INR 80 And A Mumbai Terrace

To make the subject relatable, the chapter draws on stories of Indian entrepreneurs. One of them is the story of Lijjat Papad, which began in 1959. Seven homemakers living in a Mumbai chawl started making papads with borrowed supplies, a traditional recipe and INR 80 in borrowed capital, working from a terrace. With no established factory, each woman took dough home in the morning, rolled papads while managing household work, and returned with the finished product by evening. Why Are IITs Restricting 22 Companies From Campus Hiring Over Revoked Job Offers?

Mohan Singh Oberoi's Journey From INR 50 Salary To Hotel Empire

Another story featured is that of Mohan Singh Oberoi, who began his working life on a salary of INR 50 and went on to become a key figure in India's hospitality industry. The book notes that Oberoi mortgaged his wife's jewellery to buy his first hotel, and later built an extensive hotel business.
