New Delhi, January 5: A severe cold wave coupled with dense fog has forced authorities across several states to extend school closures, as plunging temperatures and low visibility continue to disrupt daily life. With winter conditions intensifying, administrations have prioritised student safety, delaying the reopening of schools after that were earlier scheduled to resume classes this week after winter vacations.
Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh has been among the worst affected states. District administrations in Noida and Ghaziabad, part of the NCR region, have ordered temporary school closures due to dense fog and hazardous commuting conditions. In several districts, schools up to Class 8 remain shut, while in high-alert zones the closure has been extended till January 14 to protect younger children from extreme cold. Bihar
Several districts in Bihar have suspended morning classes to help students avoid exposure during the coldest hours of the day. Local administrations said the decision will be reviewed daily depending on temperature trends and fog conditions.
Assam
Cold wave conditions have also impacted the northeast. The Assam government has directed all schools across the state to remain closed till January 6 as a precautionary measure amid falling temperatures.
Delhi
In the national capital, most schools are currently observing their pre-scheduled winter vacations. Education officials said an extension of the break may be considered if dense fog and cold conditions persist over the coming days.
Authorities have advised parents to stay updated through official district notifications, as reopening dates remain subject to change based on local weather assessments. Student safety, officials reiterated, remains the top priority amid the ongoing cold wave.
