Delhi, February 6: The Delhi government is set to reintroduce iconic double-decker buses to the capital's roads later this month, specifically designed for a new heritage sightseeing circuit. Scheduled for a launch around February 20, 2026, the service will feature open-top electric buses connecting major landmarks such as the New Parliament building, Kartavya Path, and the National War Memorial. The initiative aims to provide both domestic and international tourists with an elevated, panoramic view of the city’s historic and modern architecture.
The project, which marks the return of double-deckers after more than three decades, is part of a broader tourism strategy announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The electric buses, manufactured by Ashok Leyland under a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, have been handed over from the transport department to the Delhi Tourism Department. Officials have confirmed that the route is finalised and awaits a formal inauguration to coincide with the government’s first anniversary. Delhi Relaunch Double-Decker Tourist Buses: Key Routes and Destinations
The new "Heritage Circuit" focuses on the cultural and political heart of the city. Unlike traditional city buses, these vehicles will ply a dedicated path through Lutyens' Delhi, where wide roads and high clearances accommodate their 4.75-meter height.
Primary stops include:
- Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya (Prime Minister’s Museum)
- National War Memorial
- Bharat Mandapam
- New Parliament Complex
- Kartavya Path
- Dilli Haat
Fare Structure and Timings
To cater to the "Delhi by Night" experience, the service is expected to operate primarily in the evenings. Tours are likely to begin after 6:00 PM, allowing visitors to see illuminated monuments after regular museum hours.
| Category | Ticket Fare |
| Adults | INR 500 |
| Children (Ages 6–12) | INR 300 |
Each bus can accommodate over 63 passengers and will feature an on-board guide. These guides will provide live commentary on the cultural and historical significance of each landmark, ensuring an educational experience alongside the commute. Sustainable Sightseeing
The transition to electric double-deckers aligns with Delhi’s goals for sustainable urban mobility. By using zero-emission vehicles, the government hopes to promote eco-friendly tourism while reducing the congestion caused by multiple private tourist taxis in the Central Vista area.
Officials noted that the open-top design is a deliberate choice to allow for better photography and immersive views. The buses are also expected to be adorned with vibrant graphics of Delhi’s famous icons, such as the Signature Bridge and India Gate, making them easily identifiable landmarks themselves.
A Return to Delhi’s Heritage
Double-decker buses were once a staple of the city's transport network, operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) as "Suvidha" buses. However, they were phased out in 1989 due to an aging fleet and maintenance challenges.
While previous attempts to revive the format for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2023 G20 Summit faced logistical hurdles, officials believe the current dedicated tourist circuit model is more sustainable than integrating them into regular, high-traffic city routes.
