Srinagar, May 25:  During the initial probe in Major Leetul Gogoi’s case, the Jammu and Kashmir police stated that the girl involved in the controversy had come to meet the major on her own. A senior police officer on the condition of anonymity told Hindustan Times that the documents presented to the police by the girl in the controversy involving Major Gogoi, and a Kashmir hotel, revealed that she was not a minor and that she had come to meet the army officer of her own will.

On Wednesday, Major Gogoi, the girl, and a local man were detained by the police. Major Gogoi had booked a room in a hotel and the other two reached the hotel wanting to meet him in his room. When the staff objected, an altercation broke out following which the police were called.

According to the report, the girl in her statement said that she had gotten in touch with the officer over Facebook. The girl was born in November 1999 as per her aadhar card which was submitted to police. The probe is still underway in the case.

After the initial questioning by the police the major was allowed to rejoin his unit, 53 Rashtriya Rifles. Another police official told Hindustan Times that the officer had violated the standard operating procedure. He did not inform the head of his unit and visited the civil area without any security.

While commenting on the entire controversy, Former Corp Commander of Chinar Corps, Lt General (retd) Syed Ata Hasain tweeted, ““only legal sticking point can be the Major’s presence in an unauthorised area”.

Earlier in the day, The Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat while his interaction with reporters at Pahalgam said, “If Major Gogoi has done something wrong, I assure you that he will be awarded punishment at the earliest...the punishment will set an example.” Meanwhile, the mother of the girl said that in the past Major Gogoi had raided her house twice.

On Wednesday, Major Gogoi, Sameer Ahmed and the girl were questioned at a police station following an altercation at the Hotel Grand Mamta after the staff refused to let her in. Major Gogoi shot to fame last year after tying a local Kashmiri Farooq Ahmed Dar to a bonnet of his vehicle in Budgam district in an attempt to prevent stone-pelters from targeting his convoy.
