New Delhi, June 20: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Thursday said that he met the chairman of Special Investigation Team (SIT) of 1984 anti-Sikh riots and he assured him to reopen the case. The Akali Dal-BJP MLA told SIT Chairman to register deposition of two witnesses and investigate a fresh a case against Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath for his alleged involvement in the riots. "We met the Chairman of SIT (1984 anti-Sikh riots) and told him to register deposition of 2 of our witnesses and reopen the case against Kamal Nath. Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry has forwarded the communication to SIT seeking to record statements of eyewitnesses who claimed to have seen Kamal Nath allegedly leading a mob during the 1984 massacre. Till now, only 40 detainees have been awarded punishment.

The 1984 Sikh Massacre was a series of organised pogroms against Sikhs in response to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. According to the government, about 2,800 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and 3,350 national wide. But the independent sources estimate numbers to be about 8,000–17,000.
