The fire reportedly started after an air-conditioner unit malfunctioned following an electrical short circuit. The incident occurred at around 11:40 pm, when the AC unit reportedly exploded, triggering a fire and filling the newborn ward with thick smoke. At the time, 24 babies were present in the NICU, according to Adilabad District Collector Rajarshi Shah.
Hospital staff, along with fire, police and medical and health department personnel, immediately began evacuating the infants from the ward. The district collector said the five-day-old baby died during the shifting process. The remaining 23 babies were moved to different hospitals, where they are being monitored and treated by paediatricians. Three security personnel are also undergoing treatment following the incident. Firefighters reached the hospital and brought the blaze under control before it could spread to other parts of the facility, officials said. Authorities have ordered a detailed enquiry to establish the exact cause of the fire and determine whether any safety lapses contributed to the incident. Collector Rajarshi Shah said the immediate priority was to ensure the safety and treatment of the infants who were shifted to other hospitals.
