Alambadi Azmi Dies at 90, Tributes Pour In for the Oldest Samajwadi Party MLA in Uttar Pradesh

Tributes poured in on Thursday after Alambadi Azmi, the Samajwadi Party's oldest MLA and a five-time legislator from Uttar Pradesh's Nizamabad Assembly constituency, died at the age of 90 following a prolonged illness.

Azmi breathed his last late Wednesday night at his residence in Azamgarh. He had been undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Lucknow since April after his health deteriorated and was discharged only a few days ago. His last rites will be held at 4 pm on Thursday.

Known for His Simple Lifestyle

Born on March 16, 1936, in Azamgarh, Azmi completed his Intermediate education at Islamia College, Gorakhpur, in 1953 before earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1956.

Despite his long political career, he remained known for his modest lifestyle. Mulayam Singh Yadav's Close Associate

Alambadi Azmi was counted among the closest political associates of late Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and was widely respected for his integrity.

A well-known incident from the 1996 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections is often cited as an example of his honesty. Mulayam Singh Yadav had reportedly given Azmi INR 5 lakh to contest the election, but Azmi returned the money, saying he did not need financial assistance to fight the polls.

The gesture became one of the defining examples of his principled approach to politics and continues to be remembered by colleagues and supporters.
