The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 will remain suspended from August 9 on both the Chandanwari route in Anantnag and the Baltal route in Ganderbal, the administration said on Saturday, August 8. The decision follows recent rains that affected vulnerable stretches of the pilgrimage tracks and a forecast of adverse weather conditions over the next few days.
The 57-day pilgrimage began on July 3 and was scheduled to continue until August 28. According to the administration, the suspension will allow repair and maintenance work on vulnerable stretches to be carried out safely, while also reducing risks to pilgrims amid the expected weather conditions. Why Is Amarnath Yatra Being Suspended?
Recent rainfall has affected vulnerable stretches of the Yatra tracks, creating the need for repair and maintenance work. The restoration work is being carried out by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), according to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted adverse weather conditions over the next few days. Authorities said the suspension is intended to ensure pilgrim safety and allow track restoration work to proceed smoothly. The suspension will apply to both routes from August 9. Both Chandanwari And Baltal Routes Affected
The Yatra commenced simultaneously from the Chandanwari track in Anantnag district and the Baltal route in Ganderbal district. Both routes will remain closed for the pilgrimage from August 9 as restoration work is undertaken on vulnerable sections. The administration has advised pilgrims to follow instructions and advisories issued by the competent authorities.
Over 4.8 Lakh Pilgrims Have Had Darshan
More than 4.8 lakh pilgrims have performed darshan at the Holy Shrine so far during this year’s pilgrimage. The 2026 Yatra began on July 3 and was originally scheduled to continue through August 28. The latest suspension does not alter the scheduled culmination of the pilgrimage through the traditional Chadi Mubarak ceremony.
Chadi Mubarak To Mark Yatra Culmination
Despite the suspension of the regular pilgrimage from both routes, Chadi Mubarak will proceed through the traditional Pahalgam route. It will mark the culmination of the 2026 Yatra on August 28. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg said the traditional event would proceed as scheduled.
“More than 4.8 lakh pilgrims have performed darshan at the Holy Shrine so far. However, due to the recent rains, a necessity for the repair & maintenance of the Yatra tracks at vulnerable stretches has been felt, which is being undertaken by Border Roads Organization (BRO). In addition, adverse weather conditions have been predicted by IMD over next few days. Hence, the Yatra shall remain suspended from both routes with effect from 9th August, 2026. Chadi Mubarak shall proceed via traditional Pahalgam route and shall mark the culmination of Yatra 2026 on 28th August”, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg said.
Authorities Appeal To Pilgrims
Garg appealed to all the pilgrims to follow advisories issued by the competent authorities from time to time. The administration said the directions are aimed at ensuring the safety of pilgrims and facilitating the smooth conduct of the Yatra. The suspension will remain in effect from August 9 as restoration work and preparations for the expected adverse weather conditions are addressed.

The 57-day Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra commenced on July 3, 2026, from both the Chandanwari and Baltal routes.
The regular pilgrimage will now remain suspended from August 9. The traditional Chadi Mubarak procession through the Pahalgam route will mark the formal culmination of the 2026 Yatra on August 28.
