Anantnag Encounter: Army Soldier Martyred, Two Jaish-e-Mohammed Terrorists Killed

Srinagar, June 18: An Army soldier was martyred and two terrorists of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) were killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district on Tuesday. One more terrorist is believed to be still trapped inside a building at the encounter site. The exchange of fire was underway. The identity of the martyred jawan was not immediately known.

A cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched by the Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group of Jammu and Kashmir police in Waghama village in Anantnag following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants there. The search operation turned into a gunfight after terrorists fired at them. Two other soldiers were also wounded in the gunfight and taken to a hospital. The encounter comes a day after three attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. On Monday, an army major identified as Ketan Sharma and a militant were killed in an encounter in Bidoora village of Anantnag district. Three soldiers including a major were also injured in the gunfight. The martyred major hailed from Meerut Cant in Uttar Pradesh.

The second attack took place in Pulwama. Terrorists attempted to attack a mobile vehicle patrol of 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) with an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Arihal area. Two soldiers who were injured in the attack succumbed to their injuries today. Some other soldiers are still being treated at the hospital.

In the third attack, terrorists hurled a grenade at the headquarters of the 180 CRPF battalion camp in Tral sub-district of Pulwama. The grenade exploded outside the headquarters. No casualties have been reported.
