Andhra Pradesh: Man Kills Woman, Dumps Body Parts in Canal Following Dispute Over Money
Local police in Vijayawada have arrested a local butcher and an associate in connection with the brutal murder of a woman, whose body was allegedly dismembered and dumped into a canal following a financial dispute.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Andhra Pradesh’s NTR district for allegedly killing a 30-year-old woman following a dispute over money, dismembering her body and dumping the remains in a cooling canal, police said. Investigators identified the victim after her brother recognised a tattoo on one of the recovered body parts, TOI reported.
Body Parts Recovered From Canal
The case came to light on September 18, when police recovered the torso of an unidentified woman from a canal near the Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station. With assistance from an NDRF team, investigators subsequently recovered other body parts, including the head, legs and a hand. The remains were sent to Vijayawada Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police circulated details and photographs of the unidentified woman, following which her brother approached them and helped establish her identity as Valluripalli Kalyani, a native of Eluru district who had been staying near Vijayawada.
Police Trace Suspect
Police investigation into Kalyani's movements, phone records and contacts led them to Mohd Shafi, a resident of Bhavanipuram who runs a small mutton shop and was known to the victim. According to police, Kalyani had made 68 calls to Shafi. CCTV footage allegedly showed her entering his residence on the afternoon of September 17, while footage also recorded Shafi's movements later that day. Police said bloodstains were found at Shafi's residence and near the Gollapudi canal. Forensic evidence is being examined as part of the investigation. Money Dispute Under Investigation
According to investigators, Kalyani had allegedly been demanding additional money from Shafi. Police said she went to his house on September 17 after telling him she would come to collect money. An argument allegedly broke out between the two. Police said Shafi attacked Kalyani with a knife during the altercation, causing her death.
Investigators allege that Shafi subsequently contacted Durga Rao alias Abdullah, who worked at his mutton shop, to help dispose of the body. Police said the two allegedly dismembered the body and transported the remains to the cooling canal.
Second Suspect Absconding
Police have registered a murder case on the complaint of Kalyani's brother and arrested Shafi. Durga Rao, who is alleged to have assisted in disposing of the body, remains absconding, according to police. Investigators are continuing to examine CCTV footage, call data records and forensic evidence to establish the sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Investigation Continues
The case remains under investigation, with police working to recover additional evidence and trace the second suspect. Officials are also examining the alleged financial dispute and the events leading up to Kalyani's death. The allegations against the accused are part of the ongoing investigation and will be subject to the judicial process.
