New Delhi, August 6: The Supreme Court, on Monday, will hear petitions challenging the validity of Article 35A, which gives special powers to Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to define 'permanent residents' of the state and provide special rights to them. The hearing comes at a time, when the ground situation in Kashmir remains tense.

On Sunday, a shutdown was called by separatists in support of Article 35A, which affected the daily life across the Kashmir Valley. A call for complete shutdown was made by the separatist group Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) for two days, in support of the Article that has been challenged in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court will hear the matter today. Check the ANI tweet below:

Shah Faesal, an IAS officer, whose earlier post on social media platform Twitter, attracted disciplinary action, on Sunday compared Article 35A of the Constitution to a marriage deed or 'nikahnama'.

"You repeal it and the relationship is over. Nothing will remain to be discussed afterwards," said the IAS officer in his latest tweet.

The ongoing Amarnath Yatra, which will end on August 26, had to be stopped temporarily after the shutdown was declared by separatist groups. Promulgated on May 14, 1954, the Article gives state legislature the power to define the permanent residents of the state and also their privileges. (With Agency Inputs)
