Two children fell ill and died early Monday, August 17, after complaining of severe stomach pain at a school hostel in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, with officials noting that the victims were among those who had consumed momos hours earlier. The tragic incident, which has led to suspicions of food poisoning, also resulted in a third student being hospitalised as authorities launch a comprehensive investigation into the unregistered facility.

Timeline of the Tragedy in Banda

The incident occurred at the residential hostel of BL Vidya Mandir in Jheel Ka Purwa, located under the City Kotwali area, where 34 children reside, reports the Times of India. According to school authorities, the students had eaten dal, roti, and sabzi for dinner before going to sleep at around 10:30 pm on Sunday, August 16. However, families and local officials reported that the children had earlier eaten momos. Banda Becomes Hottest Place in India at 48 Degrees Celsius As Severe Heatwave Grips Uttar Pradesh, Heat Stroke Cases Rise.

Local administration officials swiftly stepped in following the fatalities. BSA AR Tiwari stated that two children had died and confirmed that "the school did not have recognition for running a hostel". He added that an investigation was underway and noted that the affected children were among those who had eaten momos.  Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shivraj provided details regarding the immediate medical response and ongoing procedures. Additional SP Shivraj said the two children died after their health deteriorated and that postmortems were being conducted, while police teams continue to examine the precise cause of the sudden illness. Banda Shocker: UP Engineer, His Wife Get Death Sentence For S*xual Abuse of 33 Boys, Selling Videos on Dark Web.

Family Grief and Accountability

Distraught family members rushed to the medical college upon receiving news of the tragedy. Arun’s mother alleged that the school administration failed to inform the family promptly about the children's worsening condition. As autopsies are conducted to determine whether food poisoning or another factor caused the deaths, district officials are auditing the hostel's operational legitimacy and safety standards.
