School students protesting over a badly damaged road in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba were allegedly manhandled by police officials, with video reportedly showing personnel misbehaving with and kicking students during the demonstration. The students from Raipura Kalan village had blocked the Jhansi-Mirzapur Highway over potholes, waterlogging and poor road conditions affecting their daily commute to school.

The protest continued for nearly three hours in heavy rain, creating long queues of vehicles on both sides of the highway. The students said repeated complaints about the roughly three-kilometre stretch connecting their village to surrounding areas had gone unanswered, leaving them with little option but to take their grievance to the road. Gen Alpha Protest in Azamgarh: Students Skip Classes, Raise Fee Hike and Teacher Shortage Issues (Video).

Students Block Highway Over Damaged Road

The commotion erupted on the Jhansi-Mirzapur Highway after schoolchildren from Raipura Kalan placed wood and stones on the road to block traffic.

The students said the road connecting Raipura Kalan, Majhalwara, Baniyatala and Mahanpura has been severely damaged by potholes, waterlogging and digging at several points. They alleged that e-rickshaws and autos frequently overturn on the stretch, putting schoolchildren at risk of injury. Gen Alpha Students Protest in Lucknow Over Teacher Shortage (Video).

Students Allege Mills Ruined Road

According to the protesting students, several pulse mills operate along the route and the movement of large, overloaded trucks has contributed to the deterioration of the road. They also alleged that sewage discharged by the mills flows onto the road, further damaging the already poor stretch.

The students and villagers claimed that repeated complaints to authorities had not resulted in action. They also alleged that mill operators threatened them when they raised objections.

Police Accused Of Misbehaving With Students

Police and administrative officials arrived after receiving information about the blockade. The city police station team and Tehsildar Abhishek Mishra reached the spot as traffic remained disrupted.

However, police were accused of using force to remove the students from the road. When female students reportedly formed a human chain, they were allegedly threatened with action against their parents and a lathi charge.

Video from the protest has reportedly drawn attention to the alleged conduct of police personnel, including claims that students were dragged and kicked while officials attempted to clear the blockade.

Protest Ends After Road Construction Assurance

The students remained on the road in the rain while pressing for repairs to the damaged stretch. Tehsildar Abhishek Mishra subsequently took up the matter with the relevant department and assured the students that steps would be taken for speedy road construction.

Traffic was restored after the assurance. The students said poor roads and waterlogging are making it difficult to reach school on time, despite the government’s emphasis on education. The alleged police conduct during the protest has also sparked anger among the students.
