Bengaluru, January 3: In a legal battle between a Bengaluru woman and Apple India, the consumer court ruled in favour of the tech giant after the woman sued the company over repair charges for her MacBook Pro. The 31-year-old woman from Bengaluru sued Apple India after her MacBook Pro 13-inch laptop faced issues following an accidental coffee spill. Despite having AppleCare+ coverage, which included protection for accidental damage, the woman was charged for the repair.
She purchased the laptop on January 5 for Rs 1,74,307 and acquired AppleCare+ for Rs 22,900, offering unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection. As per a Times of India report, the woman accidentally spilled coffee on the keyboard a few days after the purchase, resulting in the laptop not powering up. Upon depositing the device at the store, she was informed that internal damage caused by liquid spills was not fully covered under AppleCare+. The damaged laptop was returned to her, prompting her to file a complaint against Apple India Pvt Ltd, iCare Ample Technologies, and Imagine Store for alleged unfair trade practices on January 23, 2023. However, the third additional district consumer disputes redressal commission ruled in favour of Apple. The court observed that the customer had failed to prove her claim. The court further noted that despite approaching the court, the woman had privately contacted Apple's authorised service centre and had the damaged laptop fixed on February 4, 2023.The court considered this as a concealment of information, leading to the dismissal of her complaint against the tech giant and its service providers. The verdict also highlighted the limitation of coverage for internal damage caused by liquid spills under the AppleCare+ policy.
