Bihar: Posing As Cop, Man Pushes Laborer off Moving Danapur Express; Body Recovered in Ara

A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly impersonating a law enforcement official, kidnapping a 21-year-old passenger, and pushing him to his death from a moving train after attempting to extort money from his family, police said. The accused, identified as Rohit Tiwari, a native of Bariswan village in Bihar’s Bhojpur district, was apprehended following an intensive search operation across the Bihar-Uttar Pradesh border region.

The investigation unfolded after 21-year-old Nitin Kumar, a resident of Vaishali district who worked as a laborer in Hyderabad, went missing while traveling home aboard the Hyderabad-Danapur Special train (07091), NDTV reported. Extortion Calls and Kidnapping on Board Danapur Express

On the night of September 20, around 10 pm, Kumar's family received a phone call from him stating that he had been detained for smoking a cigarette by individuals claiming to be police officers who forced him off the train near Buxar station. Shortly thereafter, the callers took over the device and demanded INR 10,000 from the family to secure his release.

Believing the demand was an official penalty, the family agreed to pay and transferred INR 5,000 to Kumar's account. However, on the morning of September 21, the abductor placed another call demanding INR 20,000. Police Crackdown and Recovery of Body

Suspicious of foul play, Kumar’s family, accompanied by their local village head, approached the Buxar Railway Police Station and lodged an official complaint. Railway Superintendent of Police Anant Kumar Rai constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Danapur Railway Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kanchan Raj to trace the victim and nab the culprits.

Leveraging technical surveillance, mobile phone tracking, and CCTV footage, investigators identified the suspect and launched targeted raids, arresting Tiwari from the Mohansarai area between Buxar and Varanasi.

During custodial interrogation, Tiwari confessed to the crime, disclosing that he had pushed Kumar off the moving train when he failed to extract the demanded sum. Acting on his statement, railway police recovered Kumar's body from the tracks between Ara and Jagjivan Halt, where his father, Mukesh Rai, formally identified the remains.

Prior Criminal History and Past Offenses

Railway police officials disclosed that Tiwari is a habitual offender with a significant criminal record, including a theft case registered at Shahpur police station, a prior offense at Buxar Railway Police Station, and an assault case registered at Danapur Railway Police Station on September 9. Tiwari had spent approximately 25 months in judicial custody before securing bail two months ago.

At the time of his arrest, police recovered a brown wallet belonging to one Kailash Kumar, containing ATM cards, a PAN card, a disability certificate, and a voter ID card, alongside Tiwari's personal identification documents. Investigators noted that Tiwari had allegedly pushed two friends off a train between Bihta and Neora earlier in September, resulting in Kailash Kumar's death.

“A cunning criminal has been arrested. He has confessed to the crime of murdering a young man by pushing him off the train,” said Kanchan Raj, DSP, Government Railway Police, Patna. “He was on the run in connection with several previous cases. The matter is currently under investigation.” Authorities added that a speedy trial will be pursued in the case.
