A major rail accident was narrowly averted at Barhiya railway station in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Thursday, August 6, after several passengers and candidates crossing the railway tracks to change platforms found themselves in danger as trains moved on both sides. Some passengers were reportedly trapped between the tracks and ran to safety. No casualties or injuries have been reported.

The incident occurred amid heavy crowds at the station, reportedly linked to competitive examinations. Instead of using the foot overbridge, many passengers crossed the tracks directly to reach another platform. The situation became dangerous when trains arrived or passed through the station at around the same time. Bihar: Violence Erupts on Patna's NH-30 After Speeding Bus Kills Youth; Mob Torches Vehicles (Video).

Passengers Caught Between Trains at Bihar Railway Station

According to reports, the Gurumukhi Express was passing through the through line of platform number 2. An announcement was also made regarding the arrival of the Patna-Jasidih local EMU on the down line of platform number 1, while the Dhanbad-Patna Intercity Express was already standing on the loop line of platform number 3.

The movement of trains amid the crowd created a highly dangerous situation for passengers who had entered the tracks. Crowd Rush During Competitive Examinations

The station was reportedly crowded with candidates and their families because of competitive examinations. With a large number of people moving between platforms, several passengers chose to cross the tracks rather than use the foot overbridge.

According to Kiul Station Master God Prasad, "The incident is said to have occurred on Thursday afternoon when a train arrived and stopped at platform number two. Passengers were getting off the train and crossing the main tracks to reach the other platform, trying to take a shortcut. Meanwhile, an express train suddenly arrived from the other side."

The account describes a sudden rush among passengers as the approaching train became visible.

Passengers Ran for Safety

Sunny, a vendor present at Barhiya station, told ETVBharat, "Seeing the speed of the express train, many passengers ran and somehow reached the platform. Meanwhile, some passengers got stuck between two trains due to lack of time. But during this entire incident, no untoward or unpleasant incident occurred."

Eyewitness accounts cited in reports say passengers ran in different directions to get clear of the tracks. The situation reportedly returned to normal after the passengers reached the platforms.

A video purportedly showing the incident has circulated widely on social media. The footage reportedly shows people on or near the tracks as a train approaches, with some passengers running to safety.

A young man from Bhanpur village, under the Viruppur police station area, was reportedly filming the crowd at the station when an express train arrived on the down line, capturing the scene. The viral video has not been independently verified, and the identities of the people visible in the footage have not been established.

The incident has prompted questions about crowd management at the station, particularly because a large number of candidates were reportedly expected due to competitive examinations. Local residents have questioned whether sufficient RPF, GRP and railway personnel were deployed to keep passengers away from the tracks and direct them toward the foot overbridge.

Kiul Station Master God Prasad said, "There is a lack of overhead bridges. People travel using a single bridge, which is why this crowd was seen. Such crowds occur when boarding trains. However, no accident occurred."

Despite the dangerous circumstances, no deaths or injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. Eyewitnesses said a more serious accident could have occurred if passengers had been unable to clear the tracks in time or if the trains had been moving at a higher speed.

The incident therefore ended without reported casualties, but it has renewed concerns over the combination of heavy passenger crowds, track crossings and train movements at busy stations.

Railway Safety Rules

Crossing railway tracks is prohibited and can attract legal action. Section 147 of the Railways Act, 1989 deals with trespass and unauthorised entry onto railway property. It provides for imprisonment of up to six months, a fine of up to INR 1,000, or both, subject to the provisions of the law.

The Railways has urged passengers to use foot overbridges and other designated routes when changing platforms rather than crossing tracks.

The Barhiya incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in track crossing, particularly during periods of exceptional crowding. It also raises questions about whether passenger-control arrangements at stations are adequate when large numbers of candidates and families arrive for examinations.
