A 65-year-old woman has been arrested in Karnataka after allegedly sprinkling white mustard seeds on a judge's chair inside a courtroom in an apparent attempt to influence the outcome of her civil case. According to police, the incident was captured on CCTV before court proceedings began, and a case has been registered under the Karnataka Prevention and Eradication of Inhuman Evil Practices and Black Magic Act, 2017.

The woman, identified as Manjula, was produced before a court and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. Investigators believe she may have performed the alleged ritual in the hope of securing a favourable judgment. The incident has since gone viral on social media.

CCTV Captures Woman Allegedly Performing 'Black Magic' Ritual in Karnataka Court, Arrested

According to news agency PTI, the incident took place on Thursday, July 9, when Manjula arrived at the courtroom ahead of the scheduled proceedings in connection with a civil dispute. Police said CCTV footage allegedly showed her sprinkling white mustard seeds on the judge's chair before the court session began.

Citing the preliminary investigation, a senior police officer said the woman may have resorted to the ritual in the hope of securing a favourable judgment in her case.

Case Registered Under Black Magic Law

Following a complaint lodged by the court's chief administrative officer, police registered a case against Manjula under the Karnataka Prevention and Eradication of Inhuman Evil Practices and Black Magic Act, 2017.

"The woman was arrested, and the court has remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody. Further investigation is underway," the officer said. Police have not disclosed any additional findings from the investigation so far.

Separate Courtroom Drama in Supreme Court

The Karnataka incident comes days after dramatic scenes unfolded in the Supreme Court during the hearing of an unrelated case. A petitioner appearing in person, identified as Prabal Pratap, told a bench comprising Justices KV Vishwanathan and Alok Aradhe that he was "ordering" the court to direct the registration of an FIR against a Lucknow police officer. Addressing the judges as "judicial servant," the petitioner said:

"Mister judicial servant, I order you to order the registration of FIR against ACP Vikas Nagar Lucknow." Justice KV Vishwanathan responded: "You are ordering us?" The petitioner replied: "I am sovereign."

The hearing became more chaotic when the petitioner allegedly threw papers into the courtroom and verbally abused the court while being escorted away. "Ye de dena CJI ko (give this to the CJI)," he said while using abusive language. Despite the incident, the Supreme Court considered the petition on its merits. "We, considering the condition of the petitioner, do not propose to take any action against him," the bench said in its order.

The Karnataka Prevention and Eradication of Inhuman Evil Practices and Black Magic Act, 2017, prohibits specific practices considered exploitative or based on superstition while promoting scientific temper and protecting individuals from harmful rituals. Police can register offences under the Act if there is evidence that prohibited practices have been carried out.
