Chandigarh Cop Shot Dead at Home, Son Taken Into Custody After Claiming Outsiders Killed Father

A Chandigarh Police head constable was shot dead inside his government residence in Sector 22 on Friday morning, with police taking his son into custody for questioning in connection with the case. The deceased was identified as Nitin, who was posted in the Accounts Branch at Chandigarh Police Headquarters in Sector 9. Police received information about the shooting and a team from Sector 17 police station reached the residence. Nitin was found with a gunshot injury to his head and was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A country-made pistol was recovered from the scene, and forensic teams were called to examine the house.

Son Taken Into Custody

Nitin's wife and son were present at the residence when the incident occurred, according to Chandigarh Police SSP Kanwardeep Kaur. Police subsequently took the son, identified in reports as Armaan, into custody for questioning as investigators examined his possible role in the shooting. Some reports said investigators became suspicious of the son's account of the incident. However, police officials have maintained that the investigation is at an early stage and have not publicly established the motive or circumstances of the shooting. Police Probe Underway

Senior police officers, including SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, reached the residence after the incident. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, while forensic personnel are collecting evidence from the house. Police are also looking into the sequence of events inside the residence and the statements of family members and other people who may have information about the incident. The case comes amid a series of recent attacks involving police personnel in Punjab. Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh was shot dead in Amritsar on September 18, while ASI Jaswant Singh survived a shooting attempt in Ajnala on September 11. Police have so far not disclosed a confirmed motive in the Chandigarh head constable's death, and the investigation is continuing.
