Chhattisgarh: Teacher Booked for Harrasing 14-Year-Old Girl Student at Bijapur Residential School

A teacher at a government-run residential school in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district has been booked after a 14-year-old girl student allegedly reported harassment, police said on Sunday. The case was registered on Saturday against the teacher employed at Eklavya Adarsh Awasiya Vidyalaya in the Bhopalpattnam police station area, while efforts are underway to apprehend him.

Bijapur Additional Superintendent of Police Aman Kumar Jha said the accused, who is in his early 40s, allegedly touched the student inappropriately in October last year and also misbehaved with her on several occasions. Other Students Also Make Allegations

Police are also recording statements from some other students from Classes 9 to 11 who have alleged inappropriate touching and misbehaviour by the same teacher, another official said, PTI reported. The development has prompted investigators to examine whether there were earlier complaints about the teacher and how the school administration responded to them.

Parents of some students told police that the matter had recently been brought to the attention of the school principal. Police are also investigating whether the principal took any action after the matter was reported.

CM Orders Thorough Investigation

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has directed the Bijapur district collector and superintendent of police to conduct a thorough investigation and take strict action in the case.

"If any complaint is ignored, an attempt was made to suppress it, or negligence in duty is found at any level, accountability should also be fixed," Sai said in an official statement.

The Chief Minister also directed authorities across all districts to maintain heightened vigilance and conduct regular inspections of girls' hostels, ashrams and residential schools.

Focus On Safety Measures And Complaints

Collectors have been asked to ensure strict compliance with prescribed safety arrangements and protocols at such institutions.

The review is also expected to cover the regular presence of wardens and other responsible staff, campus security arrangements and mechanisms for addressing complaints by children, according to the statement.

Sai said the system should not be limited to taking action only after receiving a complaint. He stressed the need for regular inspections, continuous interaction and effective monitoring to identify and prevent such situations.

CM Stresses Protection Of Children

The Chief Minister said the safety and dignity of children could not be compromised and that complaints involving abuse, harassment or an unsafe environment must be addressed promptly and sensitively.

"Residential schools and hostels are not merely places of education for children, but their homes. Parents send their children to these institutions with trust, and protecting that trust is the responsibility of every official and employee associated with them," the CM said.

Sai directed district collectors and SPs to ensure immediate coordinated action by the concerned departments and police whenever complaints of misconduct, harassment or intimidation involving girl students are received.

He also said counselling and other necessary assistance should be provided to victims wherever required.

The police investigation is continuing, with statements from other students being recorded and the role of the school administration being examined. The case involves allegations made by a minor and remains under investigation. The accused teacher has not yet been apprehended, and the allegations will be subject to the ongoing legal process.
