Three infants sustained serious burn injuries late Friday night after a fire erupted inside a radiant warmer machine in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Chhindwara District Hospital. The incident occurred around 2:00 AM, triggering panic within the facility before hospital staff managed to intervene.
According to hospital officials, the infants were receiving intensive thermal support in the warmer to maintain normal body temperature following birth. Preliminary reports indicate that a sudden spark in the heating unit's filament triggered the blaze, causing immediate fire damage inside the enclosed warmer.
Medical personnel on duty quickly extracted the newborns from the burning unit and initiated emergency care. Due to the severity of their burn injuries, all three infants were rushed to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur under the direct supervision of two attending doctors. One of the newborns remains in critical condition and urgently requires surgical intervention. The transfer to Jabalpur became necessary due to the absence of a pediatric surgeon at the Chhindwara District Hospital.

Radiant warmers are standard medical devices in neonatal wards used to regulate the body temperature of premature or vulnerable newborns. Technical glitches and short circuits in hospital electrical systems have periodically raised safety concerns across critical care units in regional facilities, prompting calls for stricter equipment maintenance and regular safety audits.
Local health authorities are expected to launch a formal inquiry into the technical malfunction that caused the filament spark.
