A routine Uber ride from Gurgaon to Delhi has sparked a wider conversation on women's safety after a passenger alleged that her driver misbehaved, took a wrong route and did not match the identity shown on the app. Angellica Aribam, a political activist and founder of Femme First Foundation, detailed the alleged incident in a post on X, saying she had booked an Uber XL for the journey.

Driver 'On The Phone Throughout,' Took Wrong Route: Passenger

Aribam said the driver remained on a call with his partner for most of the ride and deviated from the correct route. 'The driver was on the phone throughout, speaking to his partner, and took a wrong route,' she wrote. She said that when she questioned him about the wrong direction, he responded rudely, allegedly telling her to 'sit quietly' before continuing to speak in the same manner. Noida Family’s Uber Ride Turns Into Terrifying High-Speed Chase After Driver Flees Police, Child Cries as Parents Beg Him to Pull Over; Accused Arrested As Videos Go Viral.

Woman Alleges Uber Driver Misbehaved, Says Details On App Did Not Match

Passenger Says She Found No Panic Button

Aribam said she felt unsafe during the ride and was unable to locate a panic button on the app. She also flagged what she called a more serious issue, alleging that the driver who showed up did not match the name and details listed on her booking. She said the platform was allowing a case of impersonation and questioned why such a mismatch was possible given the safety concerns women face while travelling alone. ‘Dispute Over 95 Paise’: Journalist, Uber Cab Driver Argue Over 95 Paise Fare in Noida; Videos Go Viral.

Uber India Responds, Seeks Trip Details

Uber India's support handle responded to the post, calling the alleged behaviour 'absolutely not condoned' and assuring Aribam that her safety remained a priority. The company asked her to share specific trip details, including the date, time and the contact information linked to her account, so its safety team could look into the matter.

Other Users Share Similar Experiences

The post drew responses from several other social media users who recounted their own uncomfortable experiences with the platform. One user said they were once paired with a driver who appeared to be intoxicated and got out midway through the trip despite paying the full fare, adding that Uber Support had reached out even before they filed a complaint. Another user said a driver dropped them off after being questioned over similar behaviour, while also criticising the platform's complaint process as slow and largely automated. One user suggested passengers check a driver's rating before accepting a ride, saying they personally avoid drivers rated below 4.8.

The allegations have renewed scrutiny over how ride-hailing platforms verify driver identities and what safety mechanisms are actually available to passengers during a trip.
