CJP Announces Jantar Mantar Protest on October 10 if CEC Gyanesh Kumar Does Not Resign

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced plans to stage a fresh demonstration at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10 if Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar does not resign. The ultimatum follows a large-scale protest in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park and stems from ongoing controversies surrounding alleged irregularities within the Election Commission.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced plans to return to Delhi's Jantar Mantar on October 10 if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign. The announcement came a day after the youth-led group organised a protest at Mumbai's Shivaji Park over the Election Commission's functioning and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said in a post on X that supporters from across India would march to Delhi for what he described as a peaceful protest. He also said the group would continue its agitation even if police stopped the march at another location. CJP Protest Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar; Opposition Calls It Fight to ‘Save Democracy’, BJP Says ‘Fake Narrative’ Won’t Succeed.

CJP Threatens Jantar Mantar Protest Over CEC Resignation Demand

CJP Plans 'Jantar Mantar 2.0'

Dipke's announcement followed the CJP's October 2 demonstration at Mumbai's Shivaji Park, where thousands of people gathered, according to reports. The protest focused on demands for Kumar's resignation and concerns surrounding electoral-roll revisions.

The CJP had earlier led a prolonged protest at Jantar Mantar over alleged examination paper leaks. That agitation ended after then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned in July, according to reports. Dipke has now referred to the proposed Delhi action as "Jantar Mantar 2.0", signalling a renewed mobilisation around the Election Commission. ‘A Lathi Can Stop a Crowd, But Not a Question’: Rahul Gandhi Backs Protesters Demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation.

Delhi Protest and Detentions

The latest announcement comes amid heightened tensions in Delhi, where protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar and the SIR exercise were held on October 2.

Delhi Police had denied permission for a planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar and imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in parts of New Delhi. Police cited public safety, public order and traffic-management concerns.

Hundreds of protesters were detained after demonstrators attempted to reach the Jantar Mantar area despite the restrictions. Among those detained were leaders and activists associated with opposition parties, student organisations and civil-society groups. Police put the number of detainees at around 700, while other reports gave higher figures.

SIR at Centre of Dispute

The protests have been linked to concerns over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties, student groups and activists have questioned the process and raised concerns about voter deletions and documentation requirements.

The Election Commission and the government have rejected allegations of wrongdoing. The dispute has also intensified following reports of differences within the Election Commission over some decisions, though the details and implications of those differences remain subject to ongoing reporting.

CJP Says It Will Continue Independently

Dipke had earlier said the CJP would maintain an independent campaign rather than join the Opposition's planned protest against the Election Commission. The organisation has called for Kumar's resignation while framing its campaign around electoral transparency and voting rights.

The proposed October 10 demonstration will depend on the CJP's mobilisation plans and the response of Delhi authorities. Any further restrictions or permissions for the protest are expected to shape how the next phase of the campaign unfolds.
