Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against organisers of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest and around 400-500 unidentified agitators following a demonstration at Shivaji Park, officials said on Saturday. The case relates to the gathering held despite the authorities denying permission for the protest. The FIR was registered at Shivaji Park Police Station under Sections 189 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 37(1)(3) and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act.

The protest was organised by CJP on October 2 against the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters raised allegations concerning irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of electoral rolls and demanded action from the poll body. Police action followed a complaint filed by Siddhi Deolekar, a local resident and advocate, against CJP activists Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Ratna Singh, along with others. The complaint alleged that the organisers proceeded with the gathering despite the denial of permission. The complaint also referred to restrictions concerning gatherings at Shivaji Park arising from a Bombay High Court judgment and subsequent directions issued by the Maharashtra government. There is also a significant difference in the estimates of the crowd size. Mumbai Police put the turnout at around 4,500 to 5,000 people, while CJP organisers claimed that 35,000 to 40,000 people attended the demonstration. The case comes as authorities continue to examine complaints linked to the protest, including allegations concerning public assembly, traffic disruption and the use of loudspeakers without permission. As of the latest reports, the police investigation is underway. No arrest was reported in connection with the FIR at the time of the latest updates.
