Congress Workers Deface CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Agra Residence During Protest
Activists from the Indian Youth Congress defaced the ancestral residence of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in Agra on Monday as part of nationwide demonstrations. Congress workers on Monday protested outside Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar’s residence in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, demanding his resignation amid the ongoing political dispute over the Election Commission’s functioning and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. According to reports and visuals circulated on social media, protesters gathered outside the residence in the morning, raised slogans and put up stickers and pamphlets. They later used black spray paint to write slogans including “Gyanesh Gaddar” and “Vote Chor” on the gate and walls. The Indian Youth Congress shared videos of the protest on X and said its workers had blackened the CEC’s house. The organisation also levelled allegations against the Election Commission and said it would continue its campaign demanding action against Kumar.
Congress Demands CEC’s Resignation
The protest is part of a wider Congress campaign against Kumar and the Election Commission. The party has alleged irregularities in the electoral-roll revision process and has called for the CEC’s resignation. Congress and other opposition parties have intensified their criticism amid the ongoing SIR exercise in several states, including Delhi and Maharashtra. The Election Commission, however, has defended the SIR process, saying decisions related to the exercise were taken unanimously by the full commission. It has also rejected allegations concerning the functioning of its digital systems and said its platforms operate under data-security protocols.
Protest Comes Amid Wider ECI Row
The latest incident comes as the political confrontation over the Election Commission continues to escalate. On September 26, the poll panel said it would review its ECINET portal and that future digital initiatives would undergo additional discussions and checks.
The Election Commission has also extended deadlines linked to the SIR process in Delhi and Maharashtra by roughly a month, while making changes to some procedural requirements.
Gyanesh Kumar, a 1988-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, became Chief Election Commissioner in February 2025. The allegations made by political parties regarding the functioning of the Election Commission remain contested, with the poll panel maintaining that its decisions have followed established procedures.
