A deep depression (Cyclone Arnab) over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is moving towards the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts and is expected to cross the shoreline by the night of September 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

According to the latest IMD bulletin, the system moved westwards at about 7 kmph during the previous six hours and was centred at 11:30 p.m. IST on September 22 near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 85.0°E. Track and Intensity Forecast

The deep depression is very likely to continue moving west-northwestwards and cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam, as a deep depression by the night of September 23. Earlier updates had indicated the system would intensify from a depression into a deep depression and make landfall during the night of September 23 to the early hours of September 24. Subsequent observations confirmed it had already strengthened into a deep depression while continuing on a west-northwestward path.

Why Some Reports Call It Cyclone Arnab

The name Arnab appears in media coverage because it is the next name on the regional list of tropical cyclone names for the North Indian Ocean. The list is maintained by the World Meteorological Organisation and the IMD, with contributions from member countries. Bangladesh proposed the name Arnab, which means “ocean” in Bengali. However, the IMD has not classified the system as a cyclonic storm. It remains a deep depression. The name Arnab would be assigned only if the system intensifies further to cyclonic storm strength.
