Intense spell of rainfall hit the National Capital Region (NCR) on Friday, August 7, triggering extensive waterlogging and crippling the evening peak-hour commute. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert for Delhi and surrounding satellite cities, warning of persistent severe downpours, thunderstorms, and potential localized flooding into the night. The sudden deluge submerged major traffic corridors across New Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, stranding thousands of commuters and creating severe traffic snarls across the urban cluster, TOI reported.

Severe Traffic Gridlock and Waterlogging Across Arterials

The persistent downpour severely hampered traffic movement during the Friday evening rush hour. Major intersections and key thoroughfares—including the ITO junction, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Patel Road, Wazirabad Road, Shankar Road, and Rohtak Road—reported deep water accumulation that brought vehicles to a crawl.

In East and South Delhi, critical stretches around GT Road, Dilshad Garden, Peeragarhi, and Shaheen Bagh experienced long traffic queues. Low-lying residential pockets such as Dakshinpuri, Sangam Vihar, Okhla, and Sainik Farms suffered heavy inundation, forcing police and civic authorities to divert traffic away from submerged underpasses. Delhi-NCR Rain Paralyses City: Waterlogging, Traffic Chaos and Trees Collapse as IMD Issues Red Alert (Watch Videos).

Interstate routes connecting Delhi with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh were equally affected, with long vehicle backups reported along the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and key transit points into Noida.

According to weather data, official observatories recorded heavy rainfall totals throughout the day, led by Ayanagar with 87.4 mm and Palam with 73.5 mm, while the central Safdarjung observatory logged over 59 mm. The overcast conditions and rain brought daytime temperatures down sharply, with maximum temperatures dropping nearly seven degrees below normal to 27.5°C. Meteorologists attribute the spell to an active monsoon trough hovering close to the capital, with intermittent to heavy rainfall expected to persist over the weekend.

Flight Advisories and Civic Response

Adverse weather conditions also disrupted air travel at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Major domestic airlines—including IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet—issued travel advisories warning passengers of potential flight delays, air traffic holds, and extended transit times to the airport due to waterlogged approach roads. Civic agencies and traffic police personnel deployed portable pumps and emergency response teams across critical waterlogging points to clear choked drainage channels and manage stranded vehicles. Authorities advised commuters to check real-time traffic updates before venturing out.
