A Delhi court on Monday convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and four other co-accused for the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) staffer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 Northeast Delhi communal violence. Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh of the Karkardooma Courts pronounced the judgment, finding Hussain and others guilty under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 302 (murder).
The case stems from the intense communal clashes that erupted in Northeast Delhi in February 2020 during protests surrounding the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The resulting violence claimed 53 lives and left hundreds injured. Ankit Sharma, a 26-year-old IB officer, went missing on February 25, 2020, after leaving his residence in Chand Bagh to purchase household groceries. His body was recovered the following day from a nearby drain, bearing over 50 injuries inflicted by sharp weapons and blunt force trauma. The investigation, registered under FIR 65 at the Dayalpur police station, was initiated based on a complaint filed by the victim's father, Ravinder Kumar. The prosecution contended that a mob had assembled at Hussain's office and residence, from where the attack on Sharma was executed. While the court convicted Hussain on key charges—including rioting, promoting enmity between groups, and murder—it acquitted him of criminal conspiracy under Section 120B.
