Chandigarh, December 24: At least 50 vehicles crashed into each other on the Rohtak-Rewari highway on Monday morning, killing at least eight people and injuring many others. According to reports, the massive accident happened in Haryana's Jhajjar on the Badli flyover due to dense fog in the morning hours today.

The Haryana government has announced compensation for the victims. Haryana Minister OP Dhankar said, "Compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the kin of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh to those severely injured and Rs 50,000 to those with minor injuries."

Dense fog has engulfed various parts of North India over the past few days. The visibility has been extremely low. Meanwhile, temperatures have also dropped below normal. On Saturday, Karnal recorded a minimum temperature of zero degrees Celsius.

Earlier last week, a similar accident took place when at least 10 vehicles piled up on the Ludhiana-Khanna road due to dense fog. No casualty was reported while some people sustained minor injuries in this accident.

In Jhajjar, efforts are underway to remove the crashed vehicles from the spot. The injured people have been taken to a nearby hospital.
