The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Sunday, October 4, directed Everest Food Products Private Limited to immediately recall a batch of its pre-packed cumin powder after laboratory tests found pesticide residues exceeding prescribed maximum limits. The sample was declared “unsafe” under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Sample Collection and Initial Findings

A regulatory sample of the pre-packed cumin powder was drawn from the premises of Riverside Resorts & Holiday Homes Pvt. Ltd. in Goa. The Food Analyst’s report detected residues of azoxystrobin and thiamethoxam above the permitted levels. Confirmation by Referral Laboratory

The food business operator was given an opportunity to appeal the analyst’s findings. The sample was then sent to the Referral Food Laboratory, which confirmed the results. Both azoxystrobin and thiamethoxam remained above the prescribed maximum limits, upholding the “unsafe” declaration.

Recall Directions and Company Obligations

FSSAI has ordered the entire implicated batch - Batch No. E080668761 - to be recalled from the market without delay. The company must maintain complete records of the recalled product, submit the required recall information and status reports within stipulated timelines, and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
