FSSAI Suspends TCF Chocolates, Shivam Agro Licences Over Pests, Expired Colours, Hygiene Lapses
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the licences of TCF Chocolates and Gifts Private Limited and Shivam Agro after inspections found serious food safety, hygiene, sanitation and labelling violations at their facilities.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the licences of TCF Chocolates and Gifts Private Limited and Shivam Agro after inspections found serious food safety, hygiene, sanitation and labelling violations at their facilities. The action against TCF Chocolates and Gifts followed a consumer complaint concerning food ordered through an e-commerce platform. Subsequent inspection by FSSAI officials found multiple lapses, including pest infestation, poor sanitation and improper storage practices.
FSSAI Finds Cat Droppings, Expired Food Colours at TCF Chocolates
During the inspection of TCF Chocolates and Gifts, officials reported poor hygiene and sanitation conditions in food-processing areas. The facility was found to have pest infestation, cat droppings and uncovered drainage. Inspectors also detected expired food colours and flavours on the premises.
Cleaning chemicals were reportedly stored close to raw materials and food-related items, creating a potential contamination risk. FSSAI also flagged inadequate hygiene and protective practices among food handlers, including shortcomings in jewellery-control measures. The regulator said the company had earlier recorded a compliance score of only 14 per cent, linked to the non-availability of required documentation. Shivam Agro Inspection Finds Flies, Sewage Water and Rodent Activity
The inspection at Shivam Agro also revealed several food safety concerns. According to FSSAI, inspectors found flies, garbage, stagnant sewage water and spider infestation at the facility. Cleaning of floors, equipment, walls and ceilings was found to be inadequate. Officials also reported evidence of rodent activity and ineffective pest-control measures. Food ingredients and non-food items were being stored together, while food products were reportedly kept in corridors and temporary storage areas, contrary to prescribed food safety requirements.
Corroded Equipment Used for Edible Oil
FSSAI also raised concerns about the condition and suitability of equipment at Shivam Agro. Inspectors found rusting and corroded equipment at the facility. The company was using iron and ferrous tanks and vessels for blending edible oil but could not satisfactorily demonstrate that the equipment was suitable for food-contact applications. The regulator also noted the absence of a functional in-house laboratory. Shivam Agro reportedly failed to provide records showing periodic testing of finished food products during the inspection.
Labelling Violations Also Flagged
Both companies were found to have deficiencies in food labelling. At TCF Chocolates and Gifts, food product names were not adequately declared on labels. At Shivam Agro, inspectors found incorrect declarations related to serving information and cholesterol content on a plant-based edible oil product. FSSAI Orders Both Firms to Stop Food Business
Following the inspections, FSSAI suspended the licences of Shivam Agro and TCF Chocolates & Gifts Private Limited with immediate effect. The regulator has also directed both companies to cease all food business activities during the suspension period. The action comes as part of FSSAI's regulatory oversight of food businesses and follows inspections prompted by consumer concerns and identified compliance issues.
