The Hyderabad Police, in a joint operation with the H-NEW (Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing) and Gudimalkapur police, have dismantled an extensive, multi-crore inter-state drug smuggling syndicate that exploited India Post’s Speed Post and commercial courier services to deliver contraband across 21 states.
The enforcement teams intercepted suspicious postal packages in the SR Nagar and Gudimalkapur areas. Investigators discovered that the illicit network had set up an efficient "door-delivery" system, processing between 80 to 100 orders daily. While the bulk of their logistics relied on private courier systems, approximately 8 to 10 orders per day were routinely routed directly through national postal services. A key mastermind behind the operations, identified as Satyam Mishra from Jharkhand, has been taken into police custody. According to Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Sajjanar, Mishra—a former driver who took up cannabis cultivation in 2018—formed a syndicate alongside three associates: Rahul Jai, Sachin Mishra, and Santosh. The group contracted local villagers in Jharkhand to scale up marijuana cultivation before shipping it out to metropolitan centers including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, and Bengaluru.
To bypass law enforcement and postal screening, the syndicate falsified their shipment declarations, labeling the packages as medicinal items. The parcels were booked from the Isri Bazar and Phusro post offices in Jharkhand, carrying quantities ranging between 50 to 250 grams of ganja per packet. Individual packages were sold to customers at premium rates varying from ₹1,500 to ₹8,000 depending on the volume.
Financial tracking revealed that the syndicate generated daily revenues of approximately ₹1 lakh, leading to a monthly income of ₹30 lakh to ₹35 lakh. The network's annual turnover is estimated between ₹4 crore and ₹5 crore. The illicit profits were heavily laundered through online UPI platforms and multiple bank accounts, with the accused purchasing gold assets and luxury vehicles to obscure the cash trail. Operating largely via encrypted communication channels, the group accepted customer orders using unique codes on WhatsApp and social media. Because Speed Post parcels arriving via commercial flights and domestic trains do not undergo mandatory, widespread scanning, the syndicate successfully exploited this loophole for years.
The Hyderabad Police have announced that they will formally write to central government ministries requesting the implementation of mandatory scanning protocols for all national postal parcels. Furthermore, strict directives have been issued to private courier services within Hyderabad to implement mandatory scanning for all incoming and outgoing packages, urging immediate notification to police regarding any suspicious cargo. Four additional suspects connected to the syndicate remain at large as the police investigation continues.
