Woman Left Husband and Went to Live With Another Man
According to the police complaint and reports, the woman was married to a man from Vapi but had left her husband and gone to Chotila, where she stayed with another man for around three months. Her family later traced her and brought her back to Vapi. She was allegedly confined inside a house but managed to escape. About five days before the reported incident, she returned to Chotila and began staying with the man again. The woman’s husband allegedly learned that she had returned to her partner and informed relatives about the relationship. The couple were subsequently traced and taken to Surendranagar on the pretext of carrying out a “purification ritual”.
Couple Allegedly Beaten and Confined
Police said the couple were allegedly beaten with wooden sticks after being brought to Surendranagar. The man was reportedly tied to a tree with a rope, while the woman was confined inside a room. The alleged assault was carried out in front of other people, with the accused claiming that the acts were part of a purification ritual linked to the woman’s relationship.
The reported ordeal later continued in a verandah. According to the complaint, the man was forced to perform an obscene act with the woman while the accused watched. Entire Incident Allegedly Recorded on Mobile Phones
The alleged abuse was recorded on mobile phones, police said. Videos of the incident were subsequently circulated on social media. The circulation of the footage played a key role in bringing the case to the attention of authorities. Police are also investigating who recorded the videos and who circulated them online.
Police Trace Woman After Videos Surface
Surendranagar police launched a search after receiving information about the incident and coming across videos showing the alleged abuse. Superintendent of Police Premsukh Delu said police teams were deployed to locate the woman. Investigators eventually traced her, recorded her statement and initiated formal proceedings. Police said the woman had not initially approached the police station and that information from a community leader, along with the videos circulating online, helped investigators begin the probe.
Nine Arrested in Surendranagar Case
Police have arrested nine people in connection with the case, including the woman’s husband and his relatives. Two women are also among those arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident. The accused have been booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including the provision relating to gang rape, along with other sections concerning grievous hurt and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.
Police Probe Video Circulation
Investigators are examining the circumstances in which the alleged assault was carried out, the role of each of the nine accused and the recording and online circulation of the videos. The case has raised serious concerns over vigilante punishment and the use of public humiliation and violence against people involved in personal relationships. Police investigation is continuing.
