A marriage fraud case has surfaced in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior after a man allegedly discovered that his newlywed wife was already married to the man introduced as her brother during the wedding. Police said WhatsApp chats revealed the alleged relationship. A case has been registered against seven people for cheating and criminal conspiracy, while one accused has been taken into custody.

The complaint was filed by Ratan Sharma, a resident of the Naka Chandravadani area in Gwalior who works as a team leader in the emergency department of a private hospital in Jabalpur. Man Finds Newlywed Wife Already Married to ‘Brother’ Who Performed Kanyadaan
According to the complaint, Ratan Sharma’s family had been searching for a suitable bride as all five brothers in the family were unmarried. The family alleged that their neighbour, Sonu Tiwari, introduced them to a man identified as Sonu alias Ajay Chauhan from Morena. Chauhan allegedly claimed he was looking for a groom for his poor foster sister, Radha alias Diksha Mudgal.

Wedding Held in Gwalior
Ratan Sharma travelled from Jabalpur to Gwalior to attend the wedding ceremonies. Police said Sonu alias Ajay Chauhan attended a ceremony on April 27, 2026, posing as the bride’s brother. The marriage was later solemnised on May 7 in Gwalior according to Hindu rituals.
The complainant alleged that the family spent nearly Rs 7 lakh on the wedding ceremonies and related arrangements. During the wedding, Maya Devi, who was introduced as the bride’s mother, performed the kanyadaan. Shilpi Parmar, Raghavendra Parmar and Satyendra Chauhan were also presented as members of the bride’s family.
WhatsApp Chats Allegedly Revealed Truth
After the marriage, the bride moved into the groom’s house in Gwalior. The family later became suspicious because she was frequently chatting on her mobile phone. According to the complaint, Ratan Sharma checked her phone one night and allegedly found WhatsApp conversations indicating that Sonu alias Ajay Chauhan, who had posed as her brother during the wedding, was actually her husband.
The complaint further alleged that Diksha and Sonu Chauhan had married in 2024 at an Arya Samaj temple in Agra and had been living together as husband and wife.
Ratan Sharma alleged that the group planned the marriage to cheat the family and steal cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees. Following the discovery, the family took the bride to the police station and lodged a formal complaint.
Police have registered a case against Radha alias Diksha Mudgal, Sonu alias Ajay Chauhan, Maya Devi, Shilpi Parmar, Raghavendra Parmar, Satyendra Chauhan and Sonu Tiwari. Officials said the accused woman has been sent to a one-stop centre, while Sonu Chauhan has been taken into custody. Police teams are currently searching for the remaining accused.
